What is a towel rail and how does it work?
When talking towel rails, you don’t need to choose form over function. Design features in themselves, modern towel rails serve a room practically – and also serve to enhance the room itself.
Black towel rails – and matching basin tapware, bath taps, or wall mixers and assemblies – are often used to offer a striking contrast to white bathroom or laundry tiles. Or they might match shower curtain rails or other bathroom fittings like toilet roll holders and hand towel rings. These days, towels and other bath linen are used just as much for visual purposes as they are for drying. Black towel racks are ideal for displaying your artfully arranged bath and hand towels as part of your overall bathroom or laundry aesthetic.
When looking at black towel rails for bathrooms, there are a few things to consider, such as how many people use the bathroom.
If the answer is more than one or two, you’ll need to invest in a multiple-towel rack. We offer single, double, triple, and 4 rail towel racks in a variety of traditional and modern designs and finishes.
Typically, towel rail sizes that accommodate multiple towels have staggered rows and are wider than their lower capacity counterparts, instead of offering a single rail for each towel like you might imagine. This is to ensure that the visual lines and floor space aren’t compromised by an awkward fixture that juts out and can catch users on the hip or leg.
Alternately, bathroom towel ladders offer a row for each towel, one above the other. While this does mean towels will hang down over one another, they do provide significantly increased capacity, with some offering space for up to 8–10 towels.
What are the benefits of towel rails?
One of the biggest benefits of using a towel rail is that it increases the circulation of air around wet towels. This not only helps them to dry quicker, but also reduces the potential for mould and germs to cultivate in a damp environment. These benefits are particularly evident with heated towel racks, which also serve to help keep the room dry and prevent mildew.
How to install towel rails?
Depending on what surface you’re installing your black towel rails onto, it can be easy – or a job for a handyman!
If your preferred place of installation is onto tiles, we recommend hiring a professional to ensure the cuts into the ceramic are clean and don’t compromise the structural integrity of the towels or the rail once installed. Poorly made incisions into porcelain or concrete tile can cause it to crack or crumble, ruining the look of your bathroom (and rendering your lovely new black towel racks useless!).
Installation of a towel rail onto a plaster wall is much easier and can be easily accomplished by most using a few easy tools. 1. Assemble your towel rail. 2. Choose your preferred position for the towel rail on the wall. You’ll need to make sure it’s high enough that your towels don’t touch the floor when fully draped and that it’s not near any power points. If you’re mounting the towel rail on, near, or behind the door, make sure the door can fully open and close before you attach it. 3. Find the nearest wall stud (the wooden framing on the other side of the wall that holds up the plaster). You can do this by tapping along the wall with a pencil or screwdriver until you hear a solid thud that does not echo – or invest in a professional stud finder. 4. Attach the first mounting bracket to the wall stud. This will help make sure your towel rail stays secure. 5. Using the length of your black towel rails, mark the second bracket location. Before you install it, use a spirit level to make sure the brackets are level. If there isn’t a wall stud behind the location of the second bracket, you’ll need to use a nylon wall stud to ensure it doesn’t fall out of the plaster. 6. If your towel rail only has two brackets, you can now attach it to the wall. If it has four, measure the height required for the remaining brackets using the towel rail, and repeat steps 4–6. 7. Hang your towels in an aesthetically pleasing manner on your black towel rails and enjoy your handiwork!
Note: If you’re installing a heated towel rail with concealed power supply (as opposed to a standard plug), you’ll need to engage an electrician to complete the necessary wiring work. This is to ensure your physical safety and that the installation is in compliance with the relevant Australian Safety Standard. Failing to engage a licensed electrician is illegal and can render any home insurance policies and claims null and void.
